Swedish telecomms solutions provider Ericsson said on Wednesday (8 February) that it had made, together with the Russian operator VimpelCom, the world's first 3GPP standard-based compressed speech and signalling (SIGTRAN) call over IP in a commercial GSM network. The first call was made in December 2005 between Yekaterinburg and Nizhniy Tagil in a new VimpelCom coverage area. The new technology would be launched across the whole of this new region in February 2006, Ericsson said.
