The Finnish state-owned railway company VR will lose its monopoly on rail freight in 2007 under a new law signed on Thursday (29 June) by Finland's President Halonen.
The new law opens rail freight operations to competition in accordance with an EU directive.
The new law does not cover passenger rail traffic, which will remain a monopoly of VR, nor rail traffic between Finland and Russia.
