Swedish construction group NCC said on Wednesday (12 April) that, together with the Tyrens consulting company and in cooperation with ABB and Lund University of Technology, it had been commissioned to analyse the technical possibilities of building a new Extremely Large Telescope (ELT).
The telescope would be the world's largest telescope, with the capacity to identify earth-like planets in other solar systems.
The project is on behalf of IAC, Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, and would be financed through the European Union's sixth ramp programme.
Assuming a decision is made at the end of 2006, the ELT could be ready for operation in 2017.
